The New Moon occurs in the air sign of Aquarius at 4:07 pm PST on January 27, 2017. The Sabian Symbol for 8-9 degrees of Aquarius is: "A flag is seen turning into an eagle.” In astrology, the eagle represents a stage in transformation. Moving beyond the visceral attacks of a scorpion, the eagle rises above to use powers of observation and the intellect to accomplish its goals. Because the bald eagle is a national symbol for the United States, this message seems apt for the United States at this time. The symbolism suggests that America might be transformed if its citizens pay more attention to facts rather than strike so quickly against a perceived enemy.
During the last several years we have been energetically influenced by the square between the planets of change: Uranus (the rebel or revolutionary planet) and Pluto (often a symbol of the ruling class as well as difficult transformation). Although Uranus is moving away from the slower-moving Pluto, the themes of plutocracy and growing inequality continue to be pertinent themes. It appears that we will continue to see volatility around this theme, particularly more pronounced at certain times, as transiting planets move into particular degrees impacted by this tense square. This power dynamic was so articulately expressed by the late 19th century civil rights leader Frederick Douglass:
“This
struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both
moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a
demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will
quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and
wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are
resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are
prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.¹ٰ

While the Moon is associated
with the emotions, when it transits Aquarius, it takes on the characteristic of remoteness for which this sign is known. Some of the archetypes I associate with Aquarius are the Scientist, the
Genius, and the Mass Communicator. The discipline of modern astrology has assigned
Uranus the rulership of Aquarius, while traditional astrology sees Capricorn as
its ruler. I prefer a dual rulership, since Aquarians might value tradition when
viable, but they have no qualms in replacing the old with new paradigms if
situations demand a revolutionary perspective.
Aquarians gravitate
toward group and community activities, and they are often concerned with the
social welfare of the masses. Furthermore, Uranus, the co-ruler of Aquarius, is
associated with electricity and the forms of communication based on such
technologies, including the Internet and the devices on which it operates. During
the last couple of days leading up to the New Moon, we heard through news
reports that professional scientists are planning a "March for Science" in Washington, D.C. on Earth Day (April 22) to show support for measures to
counter climate change. When Mercury enters Aquarius on February 7 for a brief stay until
the end of the month, this new energy signals an ideal time for activists of various causes to be effective in networking and devising mass communication strategies.
On January
28, we usher in the Chinese New Year of the Fire Rooster. Individuals born
under this sign often like the limelight and are strong willed, sometimes to
the extent of showing dominance. Fire Roosters are active and courageous. At
their best, they are
charming and attractive, and at their
least appealing, they are vain and boastful about their accomplishments. By the
way, Donald Trump was born in a Fire Dog year and he might be especially influenced
by the quickly moving fire element this year. As a mercurial person with a quick trigger (his natal Gemini Sun conjunct unpredictable Uranus), this is like lighting a flame near a frayed wire.
Adding to the fiery energy of
the Fire Rooster at this time is the new placement of Mars, entering the cardinal sign of
Aries on January 29. Mars is the planet that pursues what it desires, and this
will be especially true when it transits Aries. Natives of the first sign of
the Western Astrology zodiac yearn to be active and in control of their lives. They
are poised to engage in battle if situations demand. Mars will remain in this
sign until the second week of March.
Also beginning a transit of
Aries (two and a half months, including a retrograde period) is Venus, the planet
ruling resources, values, aesthetics, and attraction. Venus begins her transit of
Aries on February 3. Venus prefers the receptive mode, but as she transits Aries,
she may find assertiveness appealing in pursuit of her goals.
As I have noted, there are
several significant planetary events in February. One of the most powerful
astrological features this month are the lunar and solar eclipses, which often
signal big changes for persons whose charts are affected. The first of these is
the lunar eclipse at the Full Moon at 22° Leo on
February 10. I find this particularly interesting, because the sign of Leo is
often associated with royalty, heads of state, or “big” celebrities. The Sabian Symbol for 22° Leo is "a carrier pigeon fulfilling its mission.”
Anyone with planets close to 22° of the fixed signs (Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, and
Scorpio) might be impacted by some shift in their life. On the following day,
Jupiter trines the Sun, perhaps enlarging a vision or purpose. Since Jupiter
began its retrograde on February 7, this vision may be found within us, or may
be in gestation and revealed at a later time.
As the Sun begins its transit
of Pisces on February 18, our outward engagement with the world may be
characterized by greater emotional sensitivity and a concern for more
expressions of unity. Three days later, Mars squares (tension) Pluto,
indicating that our environment might be filled with disagreements and
power conflicts.
On February 26, we experience
the second of the pair of eclipses for the month. The Solar Eclipse occurs at
8-9 degrees of Pisces, for which the Sabian Symbol is: "the race begins-intent
on outdistancing his rivals, a jockey spurs his horse to great speed.” This is
interesting imagery for Pisces, which is not known for competiveness. Yet,
Pisceans have the ability to shape shift and respond to the environment as
needed. Where in your chart do you find this degree of Pisces? Changes may occur in this sector of your life.
At this time of the Solar Eclipse, the Sun conjuncts Neptune, which
could be optimal for tapping into our imaginative powers. This energy also
exposes us to dynamics involving deception or vagueness. Situations in general might
appear unclear at this time. Mars is still square to Pluto and conjunct Uranus.
This is an extremely powerful confluence of planets, where we could encounter surprises,
as Uranus is the wild card planet.
May you all be safe and sane in these unpredictable times!
