MERCURY RETROGRADE AND GEMINI SATURATION

Today, May 18 at 6:49 pm PST, the planet Mercury goes “retrograde” until June 11. I admit that I have been a little “superstitious” in the past about Mercury retrogrades, often labeling these as times NOT to do something. I want to embrace a more mature perspective and instead see this period as a time when we need to be open to viewing things from a different perspective.

As you know, astrology developed as a symbolic system of observation as human beings evolved on the planet. In earlier times, our ancestors were limited to the observation of the sky with the naked eye, or they used simple astronomical instruments. Consequently, they perceived the planet Mercury to be moving backwards. This illusion is due to the closeness of the two planets at certain periods of the year. Yet, this phenomenon has become associated with a time when perceptions are altered and energy flow seems out of the ordinary. This period is often marked by more intense disruptions of communications and electrical equipment malfunctioning. Because of this, we often need to REpeat information, REdo our actions, and REpair our gadgets.

The typical characteristics of this retrograde phase are even more pronounced this time, because by May 21, we will have three planets (Sun, Mercury, and Mars) in the sign of Gemini, which is ruled by the planet Mercury. Gemini thrives on quick and inter-dynamic energy, so during this period, we may want to do things in quick fashion and we may be more motivated to make connections with people. Therefore, this brings more opportunities for omitting something in our actions, or not being clear in our communications with others. The message during this energetic time is that we don’t cease or postpone activity, but be aware that we may initially experience different dynamics and outcomes. Therefore, we can expect that we may have to REthink these situations.

I wish you all an enjoyable and fruitful high-energy month!
